All of which makes it a matter of historic religious importance.
And yet, for the People of Palestine, probably of greatest importance for them, is their aspiration, their desire to have an independent, sovereign and viable State of Palestine.
Yes, just like the Jews of Israel, if you like. It is about their human rights, their dignity, there right to be free of Israel's occupation of them and their lands.
While, for the Jews and the Christians, is it about their historic religious 'rights.' About them and their gods and their relationship with him.
About them believing that there is more of god in Jerusalem than there is of him anywhere else in the world.
For the Palestinians, it is more about the now, the present. About a stable and secure place they can call their home, and how they can arrive at that destination.
So, while it is right that world should make a loud noise against
President Trump's unhelpful action, for peace and justice in the Middle East.
Even though it might be considered pragmatic, in the context of America's unconditional support for the State of Israel.
It is also the responsibility of the leaders and governments of Europe, of the United Nations, to also find pragmatic ways of helping, coercing even.
The Israeli and Palestinian authorities and people, to engage into meaningful and effective negotiations to bring about a just and peaceful settlement of this decades old conflict between them.
This will require them to be less willing to accept the religious premis on which much of this conflict is based.
The purported 3000 and 1300 year old historical and religious rationale which has been used to perpetuate the impasse in getting a reasonable and just settlement of this conflict.
Less focus on what might have happened 3000 and 1300 years ago, and more on what need to be done to get this conflict resolved
And focus their arguments more on rational 21st Century thought and egalitarianism.
But, whose responsibility, obligation is it to take action to bring about a just and peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, by means of a stable, secure and viable Palestinian State?
Is it, probably, the responsibility of the Americans, especially as, being Israel's primary benefactor, protector and champion, it might be expected that the governments of Israel will heed the judicious advise of the United States?
To be continued!
